Even for experienced professionals, managing puppy play or interactions can be challenging. Play sessions can quickly escalate, creating overstimulated puppies who either prioritise other dogs over their owners or become overwhelmed and defensive, while inadvertently teaching owners to encourage inappropriate “play” that may lead to behavioural difficulties later on.
At Puppy School, we have developed a structured system that allows puppies to meet gradually and calmly. Play is still permitted, but only once puppies have become familiar in a controlled way.
Since introducing this approach across more than 100 Puppy School classes nationwide (in Spring 2023), we have consistently observed calmer puppy behaviour, while their caregivers develop better skills and are able to recognise polite and impolite behaviour more easily.
In this webinar, we will share the outcomes we’ve seen by replacing traditional free play with structured, polite greetings, along with practical techniques for implementing this approach effectively.
Presenter Bio:
Gwen Bailey, BSc(Hons), CAB and ATI (ABTC), Founder and Director of Puppy School, a network of UK puppy trainers. Author of 13 books including The Perfect Puppy and member and previous Chair of APBC, Gwen pioneered the introduction of animal behaviour knowledge to the rescue and rehoming of dogs for 13 years, before moving on to more preventative work with puppies which has been her focus, in association with over 100 trainers at Puppy School, for the past 23 years.
Louise Otter, BSc(Hons)(Animal Behaviour) and ATI(ABTC), worked at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home for 10 years, working with thousands of dogs as a dog behaviour specialist. Louise has run puppy training classes since becoming a Puppy School tutor in 2010 where she has helped with the training of over 3000 puppies of all breeds and natures. Louise is part of the team involved in innovation and finding new ways to improve training and classes, and she runs consent-based training courses and animal training workshops.
