Presentation Details:
Horses are often labelled as grumpy, lazy, resistant, uncooperative, unwilling, stressy, bolshy and other terms and these are considered normal behaviours for horses. There is a need to dispel many of the myths in the equestrian world and to understand why horses show alterations in behaviours – what are they trying to communicate to us? There is now a considerable body of evidence that alterations in behaviour, although potentially multifactorial, are often related to discomfort. There is substantial evidence that many riders and trainers are poor at recognising lameness, although lameness is the primary cause of poor performance. The Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHpE) (otherwise known as the Ridden Horse Performance Checklist) was developed to aid all involved in the equine industry to more easily recognise when horses may be experiencing discomfort when ridden. The webinar will address the development of the RHpE and its many uses. Equine behaviour during tacking-up and mounting will also be discussed.
During the Q&A, Sue Palmer, Chartered Physiotherapist and co-author with Sue Dyson of Harmonious Horsemanship: Use of the Ridden Horse Ethogram to Optimise Potential, Partnership and Performance, will also be available to give her professional experience of the use of the RHpE.
