Presentation Details:
This presentation will explore the challenges of raising rescue birds in a captive / urban environment with a deep dive into my own experiences. I will be touching on similarities between corvids and parrots and how I was able to help save a young raven called Buddy. It’s been a rollercoaster of a year, but I want my experiences and journey to help Caregivers like me who find themselves in a similar situation.
Presenter Bio:
I’m Helen Motteram, one of the first UK bird advocates and behaviourists to be focusing specifically on Corvid behaviour and training.
Through education, rehabilitation and my bird experiences I am absolutely thrilled to offer support to Avian Caregivers, create a safe community, share my experiences and educate the public.
I believe that every bird should live a life fear and pain free and their Caregivers can join them in harmony on their journey.
Gloucestershire, Cheltenham is my hometown, however I travel globally as my role as a speaker and rehabber.
It all started with my fascination of finches and parrots growing up, I was intrigued by their cognitive abilities and the way they interacted with us humans. Then I met my friend Russell Crow (a rescue rook appearing twice on This Morning!) and Glen the rescue raven, who took me on an emotional journey that all paths led to Buddy.
Buddy is a captive born raven with many health and behavioural issues. He did not understand a life in a ‘captive or urban environment’ and raising him for the first 9 months was incredibly challenging.
But Buddy has taught me lots and I now am a frequent visitor to parrot events, have a community of avian lovers and am fast becoming the go to expert for ravens!
