Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a relatively new buzz word for the animal behaviour and training world, but it’s been around a long time in human health care and research. We will discuss what EBP looks like in practice, and some of the challenges faced by researchers in our discipline.
Research is one part of EBP and this session assumes you have a few research papers stagnating in the “to be read” pile. You might be struggling to get past the formal language or odd structure, and truthfully very few articles make good bedtime reading.
Rather than skimming the abstract, reading a summary of the paper on a blog or asking AI what the article is about, we will get stuck into the juicy insides of research articles and learn how to answer the most important questions.
This session will be useful for experienced practitioners, Associate members and students alike.
Presenter Bio:
Morag K Heirs, PhD, MSc, MA(hons)(SocSci), PGCAP, ABTC-CAB, ABTC-ATI
Morag has been a practicing Clinical Animal Behaviourist for over 15 years alongside lecturing aspiring clinical animal behaviourists and dog trainers on evidence-based veterinary medicine, the human factors in behaviour counselling and advanced dog training for the University of Edinburgh and University Centre Bishop Burton. She has regularly supervised MSc student projects and has a particular interest in research, evidence based practice, Scentwork for behavioural challenges, and deaf/blind dogs.
Prior to entering the CAB world, Morag worked in evidence-based healthcare producing systematic reviews to inform NHS funding decisions. She was also the director of a validated MSc programme for acupuncturists, a discipline where evidence has been crucial in achieving inclusion in national treatment guidelines.
Morag is passionate about opening up the wonderful world of research and spreading the essential skill of critical appraisal to clinical animal behaviourists.
