Presentation Details: This explores the delicate balance between empathy and clarity about what is needed when undertaking work with animal behaviour clients. We explore how to avoid challenging situations from developing, how to ensure we don’t minimise our concerns where they need to be voiced, how to hold firm boundaries without escalating conflict, and how to stay grounded if tensions rise. In this engaging session, we’ll bring the topic to life through considering different phrases or ways of saying things and how they might come across. Whether you’re managing ‘resistance’, emotional outbursts, or ethical grey zones, this talk offers practical tools to navigate tough consultations with confidence, care, and integrity.
Presenter Bio: Suzanne Rogers is the Co-Director of Human Behaviour Change for Life (HBCL), which she co-founded with Jo White to apply the science of behaviour change in creating lasting, positive impact for animals, people, and the planet. After beginning her post-graduate career in science publishing, Suz requalified in animal behaviour and since then she has edited two books (on horse and dog behaviour), worked as an equine behaviourist for nearly 15 years, supervised numerous MSc students, and led dog population management and working equine programmes for international NGOs. Recognising that people are not only the problem but also the solution to many of the biggest challenges in animal welfare, she shifted her focus toward prevention and behaviour change. This led to her work as an independent consultant before co-founding HBCL in 2017. Today, Suz and Jo champion participatory, community-led approaches that centre on the human side of animal care and the owner in 1-1 work. Suz has authored around 20 academic papers and several books in the field, holds multiple postgraduate qualifications, and serves as a Trustee of the World Cetacean Alliance. She is also a Mental Health First Aider (adult and youth), active in youth mental health initiatives, a school mentor for struggling teens, and co-founder of a local green advocacy group and Climate Café; roles that all involve navigating difficult conversations, the very topic of her talk.
