Who is an owner? How can we reach and teach them? Karen Wild, Dip App Psych, CCAB

By definition, regardless of species, a ‘companion’ animal will have at least one human being caring for them. In order to treat the pet, we need to reach this person or people, and encourage their compliance. Failing to do this can lead to frustration on the part of the professional team, but most importantly a risk to the animal that symptoms will not be reported or treatments will not be accessed or implemented.

We explore the role we professionals play in relation to our clients and establish what barriers there may be to their following treatment instructions.

In addition we explore methods of influence (particularly social) and where ethical boundaries may lie with regard to animal needs and owner choices. What practical ways can we encourage full disclosure of symptoms, particularly with a view to accuracy and open, honest sharing.

The talk will focus on encouraging clients to employ and understand accurate behavioural description. It also will consider risk assessment with regard to behavioural symptoms and how we may convey this detail to the client and their extended family in order that potential harms are mitigated.

Finally a psychological model that may assist in supporting and changing client behaviour will be discussed.

(This lecture is designed for all levels and stages of practitioner but particularly those working directly with the public and within communities)
