Overview of the ABTC Accreditation Process (via APBC Membership)
The Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) supports members in achieving professional recognition through the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC) for the roles of Animal Behaviour Technician (ABT) and Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CAB).
The ABTC accreditation process has two main stages:
1. Knowledge and Understanding
To begin, you must demonstrate that you have achieved the required Knowledge and Understanding for your chosen role of ABT or CAB.
This can be done by completing an ABTC-recognised course or through the APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experience and/or Learning) process.
Once you have met this requirement, you are eligible to become an Associate Member of the APBC. As an Associate Member, you are working towards gaining the practical experience needed for Full accreditation.
2. Performance Criteria
After gaining sufficient practical experience, you can apply to be assessed against the ABTC Performance Criteria / Practical Skills for your chosen role.
This assessment is managed by the APBC and is the final step in the accreditation process.
On successful completion, you will become a Full Member of the APBC and are recognised by the ABTC as a fully accredited Animal Behaviour Technician or Clinical Animal Behaviourist.
Summary of the Process:
Step 1: Demonstrate Knowledge and Understanding (via ABTC-recognised course or APEL).
Step 2: Gain practical experience as an Associate Member of the APBC.
Step 3: Undergo assessment of Performance Criteria / Practical Skills.
