Presenter Bio: Rachel Rodgers is an award-winning Clinical Animal Behaviourist and co-founder of the Canine School of Trailing, where she specialises in scentwork, man-trailing, and pet trailing. With a passion for helping dogs and their owners, Rachel has developed innovative training methods to enhance dogs’ natural abilities through trailing activities, focusing on using their powerful sense of smell.
Rachel’s expertise includes guiding both pets and working dogs in trailing exercises, teaching owners how to harness their dog’s scenting skills for man-trailing – where dogs follow a human scent – and pet trailing, which is perfect for recreational purposes. Through her work at The Canine School of Trailing, she has helped numerous dogs find fulfilment and reduce behavioural issues by engaging their natural instincts in a positive way.
She holds an MSc in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, a degree in Psychology, and a PGCE teaching qualification, which supports her unique approach combining academic rigour and practical application.
Rachel’s work at Nose to Trail, along with her role at The Canine School of Trailing, has solidified her reputation as a trusted expert in the field of canine behaviour. Her ability to connect with dogs and help owners understand their pets has led to transformative results for countless clients.
Presentation Detail: As urban living increasingly becomes the norm for many companion animals, ensuring the psychological and physical well-being of our canine companions is crucial. In this talk, Rachel will explore how mantrailing and pet trailing—a form of scent-based enrichment—can offer urban dogs a meaningful outlet for their natural instincts, particularly those of working breeds that often struggle to adapt to city living.
Drawing on her experience as a registered Clinical Animal Behaviourist and founder of Nose to Trail and Co-Founder of The Canine School of Trailing, Rachel will demonstrate how trailing techniques provide more than just recreation; they give dogs a sense of purpose, improve their adaptability, and reduce behavioural issues stemming from frustration or under-stimulation. Through real-world examples Rachel will show how urban pet guardians can utilise these activities to meet their dogs’ innate needs, turning potential urban dystopias into enriched, harmonious environments for pets and their owners alike. Information will also be provided on how professionals can look to add this to their own offering through TCSOT instructor courses too.
